I am an English teacher in search of a classroom without walls.
For nine years, I was lucky enough to spend a good portion of my day in discussion about literature with students. How cool is that?
I knew I was lucky at the time, but still, I didn’t know just how much I would miss it when I left to be at home with my babies. Don’t get me wrong, I love my time at home with my girls, but I needed a way to keep literature in my life.
Why poetry and not another genre? Well, I am a poetry lover, but there is more method to my madness than that. My idea is that if I just focus on one short poem per post, everyone who reads it can actively participate–and hopefully choose to contribute to a discussion. I want to give people a 10 minute poetry experience: reading, informal analysis, and personal response.
My mission is to bring classic poetry into people’s everyday lives. I want to share poems that I think are interesting, and in the process, inspire people to dust off their old anthologies from Lit 101 classes and take another peek. By reflecting on what I find interesting about each, I hope to engage readers in thoughtful discussion about poetry and consider how it can enhance everyone’s day-to-day life.
Cheers.
And I am a middle-aged student and lover-of-words in search of a teacher…
I love the concept, and I look forward to your posts and discussion. I guess I better go find those old Lit and Poetry books!
